Football: Previewing Week 2 matchups for North Fulton teams

By Zach Shugan

The second week of the regular season features one local team playing on national television, one making a historic trip out of state, and one hosting a showdown between former region foes.

In total, 10 local teams will take the field Friday night. Northview and Fellowship Christian have bye weeks, and Cambridge called off its season opener due to COVID.

Here are some brief previews for this week’s games.

Class 7A

No. 1 Milton (1-0) @ No. 6 North Cobb (0-1)

When: Friday, Aug. 27 at 7:00 p.m.

Where: North Cobb High School

All-Time Series Record: Milton leads, 5-1

This is the game many had circled on their calendars as Milton’s biggest game of the regular season, and it still might be despite North Cobb losing at home last week to the No. 1-ranked team in Class 6A, Buford, and falling a few spots in the 7A rankings. The Warriors feature two four-star Georgia commits in senior cornerback Marquis Groves-Killebrew and senior wide receiver De’Nylon Morrissette, and junior quarterback Malachi Singleton holds offers from Georgia, Georgia Tech, Central Florida and more. Friday marks the first time Milton and North Cobb face off since October of 1991 and the first time Milton plays on national TV since 2012.

Prediction: Milton wins

Alpharetta (1-0) @ Hoover (AL) (1-0)

When: Friday, Aug. 27 at 8:00 p.m.

Where: Hoover Metropolitan Stadium

All-Time Series Record: First meeting

Alpharetta is set to take on an out-of-state opponent for the first time in program history. The Raiders will take on national power Hoover, which is also the former home of Alpharetta head coach Jason Kervin. The Buccaneers are ranked No. 23 in the country by High School Football America and are fresh off a win over North Gwinnett in the Corky Kell Classic.

Prediction: Hoover wins

Roswell (1-0) @ Centennial (0-1)

When: Friday, Aug. 27 at 7:30 p.m.

Where: Centennial High School

All-Time Series Record: Roswell leads, 16-3

Roswell goes for eight straight wins against Centennial on Friday. The crosstown rivals have squared off every year since 2000, except for two years from 2016-17, with the Hornets winning a large majority of the contests. Roswell overpowered South Forsyth last week, winning 45-26, while Centennial fell on the road to Lambert, 28-3.

Prediction: Roswell wins

Class 6A

Chattahoochee (0-1) vs Gainesville (0-1)

When: Friday, Aug. 27 at 7:30 p.m.

Where: Chattahoochee High School

All-Time Series Record: First meeting

Chattahoochee hosts Class 7A’s Gainesville in its home opener. The Cougars fell 35-0 to Alpharetta in their season opener. They showed the ability to move the ball down the field but weren’t able to finish off any drives with points on the board. Gainesville, which is the alma mater of Chattahoochee head coach Mike Malone, lost 26-10 at home to Johns Creek last week.

Prediction: Gainesville wins

Johns Creek (1-0) @ No. 4 Carrollton (1-0)

When: Friday, Aug. 27 at 7:30 p.m.

Where: Carrollton High School

All-Time Series Record: First meeting

It didn’t take long for COVID to throw a wrench in someone’s schedule. Johns Creek’s scheduled opponent for Week Two, Travelers Rest (SC), was forced to call off the game. Luckily for the Gladiators, they were able to quickly find an opponent for this week. Carrollton had its game with Newnan cancelled, so Johns Creek will head west for a battle with the No. 4-ranked team in Class 6A.

Prediction: Johns Creek wins

Class 5A

No. 1 Blessed Trinity (1-0) vs No. 3 Marist (4A) (0-0)

When: Friday, Aug. 27 at 7:30 p.m.

Where: Blessed Trinity

All-Time Series Record: BT leads, 4-1

Blessed Trinity hosts Marist for a showdown between former region foes. This is the first game of the season for Marist, while Blessed Trinity played Woodland (Stockbridge) last week and won 34-6. The Titans started the Tom Hall era last week with a win, and now they’ll try to prevent Marist head coach Alan Chadwick from earning his 400th career win. The Titans have won three games in a row against the War Eagles going back to the 2017 4A state championship.

Prediction: BT wins

Class A Private

King’s Ridge (0-1) @ Greene County (0-1)

When: Friday, Aug. 27 at 7:30 p.m.

Where: Greene Co. High School

All-Time Series Record: First meeting

The wait is over for King’s Ridge. Following a bye in Week One, the Tigers hit the road Friday to play Class A Public’s Greene County. In year two with Terry Crowder as head coach, King’s Ridge is hoping to build off a 3-5 finish and the program’s first-ever playoff appearance. The Tigers return many key pieces from last year’s team — All-Region selections Ethan Joseph, Dean Giacobbe and Quinton Grimes, to name a few.

Prediction: King’s Ridge wins

Mount Pisgah (0-1) @ Mount Paran (1-0)

When: Friday, Aug. 27 at 7:30 p.m.

Where: Mount Paran Christian School

All-Time Series Record: Mount Paran leads, 6-4

Mount Pisgah fell to No. 5 Wesleyan on the road in its season opener, and once again the Patriots are back on the road against a formidable opponent. While Mount Paran might not be on the same level as Wesleyan this year, it has finished with a winning record in 10 out of the program’s 13 seasons. Last season was not one of them, as Mount Paran went 1-7, including a 28-14 loss at Mount Pisgah. Mount Paran won its season opener, 48-13, against Lakeview Academy.

Prediction: Mount Paran wins

St. Francis (0-1) @ Athens Christian (1-0)

When: Friday, Aug. 27 at 7:30 p.m.

Where: Athens Christian School

All-Time Series Record: Athens Christian leads, 1-0

Coming off a 24-14 loss to No. 10 North Cobb Christian last week, St. Francis heads to Athens on Friday looking for its first win of the season. Athens Christian won on the road at Walker, 35-18, in its season opener. St. Francis played Athens Christian last season in Alpharetta, and the Eagles won 43-7.

Prediction: St. Francis wins
