Local hoops players earn Reg. 5-7A All-Region honors

The regular season for high school basketball has come and gone in North Fulton, and with that marks the time of year when the area’s top players receive recognition for their performance during the season.

Region 5 in Class 7A, a six-team region which includes Alpharetta, Milton and Roswell, recently announced its All-Region teams and honors, which are voted for by the region’s coaches.

Six local boys players received first or second team All-Region honors, and three were honorable mentions.

All five of Milton’s usual starters made either the first or second All-Region first team, along with one starter from Roswell.

Milton junior Bruce Thornton and sophomore Kanaan Carlyle made the All-Region first team. Senior Broc Bidwell, junior Kendall Campbell and sophomore L.T. Overton made the All-Region second team.

Jase McCullough, a sophomore guard for Roswell, made All-Region first team for the first time.

Roswell senior Michael Fitzgerald, a UMass football signee, and junior Jackson Kemp were honorable mentions, as was Alpharetta senior Malachi Chipp, who recently committed to Maryville College.

Milton head coach Allen Whitehart won Region Coach of the Year for the second year in a row, as the Eagles went 10-0 in region play for the second year in a row and finished the regular season 21-2 overall.

The Region Player of the Year award went to Cherokee senior Elijah Tucker.

On the girls’ side, five local players made either first or second All-Region team, and four were honorable mentions.

Roswell senior Makala Torrence and Alpharetta junior Jodi Goins, two of the top scoring guards in the state, were named to the All-Region first team, and neither for the first time. Torrence was Region 4-7A Player of the Year a season ago, and Goins made first team All-Region 7-6A.

Milton seniors Sky Carrasquillo and Kennedy Daniels made All-Region second team, along with Roswell sophomore Maren Cline.

Players who received honorable mention honors included Alpharetta’s Jayda Smith, Mary-Grace Durham and Simone Lett, and Roswell’s Lani Tibbetts.
