Each week, North Fulton Sports Report honors and highlights a student athlete who performed at an elite level within their sport. For the first time, NFSR is honoring two student athletes for their standout performances.
This week’s co-NFSR Athletes of the Week are Bruce Thornton of Milton High School and Jusaun Holt of St. Francis High School.
The two highly-talented hoopers led their teams to undefeated weeks and multiple wins over ranked teams, including two No. 1 teams.
Thornton, a junior guard committed to Ohio State, started the week by posting a team-high 19 points and 7 assists in Milton’s win over No. 5 Cherokee. After a 13-point performance later in the week in a win at Woodstock, Thornton capped off the week with 29 points and 8 assists in a win over Class 6A’s No. 1-ranked Wheeler.
Milton (19-2, 8-0) has a two-game lead on Cherokee in the Region 5-7A standings with two games remaining in the regular season. If the Eagles beat the Warriors on Tuesday, they will lock up a region title and one seed in the state tournament.
Holt, a senior forward signed to Alabama, led St. Francis to two much-needed wins over ranked teams. Holt nearly finished with a triple-double (20 points, 9 rebounds, 7 assists) in the Knights upset of Class A-Private’s No. 1-ranked Mount Pisgah. The next day, Holt had 20 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists in a win at No. 10 King’s Ridge.
Following their wins over the No. 1 and No. 10 teams in their classification, the Knights (3-8, 3-5) re-entered the Top 10 rankings at No. 9. They entered the season ranked No. 1 and started out 4-3 but had to forfeit four wins due to playing with an ineligible player.
